Emma Becenti

COYOTE CANYON — Services are pending for Emma Becenti, 76.

Becenti died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, in Gallup. She was born Aug. 10, 1933, in Coyote Canyon, into the Folded Arms People Clan for the Mexican People Clan.

A gathering for family and friends will be 5 p.m., Oct. 7, at Coyote Canyon Chapter House,
following services.

Floyd Bitsie

VISTA, Calif. — Services are pending for Floyd Leon Bitsie, 46.

Bitsie died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, in Vista, Calif. He was born Nov. 1, 1962, in Gallup, into the Folded Arms People Clan for the Paiut People Clan.

A gathering for family and friends will be 6 p.m., Oct. 7, at Mexican Springs Chapter House.

Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Douglas Hawthrone

SAWMILL — Funeral services for Douglas Hawthrone, 67, will be 10 a.m., Oct. 7, at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, Fort Defiance. The Rev. Gilbert Schneider will officiate. Burial will be in Fort Defiance Community Cemetery, Fort Defiance. Visitation will be 9 a.m., Oct. 7, at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament.

Hawthorne died Oct. 2, 2009, in Albuquerque. He was born May 14, 1942, in Fort Defiance, into the Mexican People Clan for the Coyote Pass People Clan.

Hawthorne graduated from Kirkland High School in 1962. He was self employed making Kachina Dolls, and worked several odds and ends jobs as a labor and carpenter for Damon Drywall and Sawmill Chapter throughout the years. His hobbies included singing navajo sons, attending Squaw dances, pinon picking, watching PBR on T.V. Hawthorne enjoyed being around his nieces, nephews and grandchildren. He was well known through is community as “The Little Medicine Man”.

Survivors include his son, Decker Hawthorne; sisters, Elena Hawthorne Peshlakai of Sawmill, Regina Kelewood of Sawmill, Lorraine Buck of Hunters Point, Gloria Nez of Shiprock, Jennifer Hawthorne of Albuquerque, Marguerita Balle Joe of Albuquerque.

Hawthorne was preceded in death by his grandparents, Suzie and Eli Smith; parents, Marie and Kirby Hawthorne; sister, Linda Davidson.
Pallbearers will be Erick Ballejos, Ed Smith, Donavan Little, Leon Nez, Dwayne Morgan, Kamrin Toadlena.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Fort Defiance Chapter House, following services.

Herman Markowitz 

GRANTS — Graveside services for Herman Markowitz, 87, were Sept. 21, in Philadelphia Pa. Rabbi Melinda Levinson Zalma officiated and Janna Wallen served as cantorial soloist.

Markowitz died Sept. 19, 2009. He was born March 22, 1922, in Philadelphia Pa.

Markowitz served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was in the second wave of Marines landing on Okinawa. His primary role was a radio man, working on the radar and aircraft radios. He later served by recording the stories of returning American POW’s held in Japan. He received a field commission as Captain during the Korean Conflict. Markowitz was an electronics technician and manufacturer’s representative until his retirement in 1994. He came to Albuquerque in 1949, then settled in El Paso,Texas in 1952, where he lived until 1985, and where he was the owner of Custom Electronics, installing and repairing sound systems and hospital equipment. He lived in Woodbridge, Va., then moved to Raleigh, N.C., until 1999, when he to Grants. Markowitz was active in the Jewish community wherever he lived, and while living in Grants, he was also an active member of Kiwanis, the Grants Senior Citizens Center, and Literacy Volunteers, where he served on the board. While living at the Hebrew Home in Rockville, he participated in the Ethical Will Project.

Survivors include his wife, LoisAnn Markowitz of Grants; daughters, Taube Jenkins of Grants, Janna L. Wallen of Rockville M.D.; brother, Oscar Markowitz of Philadelphia Pa.; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren.

Markowitez was preceded in death by his son, Eric Lee Markowitz; parents, Joseph and Annie Markowitz; sister, Min Levinson. 

Pallbearers were Jason Janet, Shana Kerey, Arlen Janet, Caasi Janet, Ed Levinson, and Fruma Markowitz.

Delaiya Woods

ENGLAND — Services for Delaiya Elizabret Woods, newborn, will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 7, in Charlee land, Whiterock. Alvin Dorsey will officaite. Burial will be in Charlee land, Whiterock.

Woods died Sept. 24, 2009, in England. She was born Sept. 24, 2009, in England, into the Mountain Cove People Clan for the Anglo People Clan.

Survivors include her parents, Tashina Laura Woods, Bryan Travis Woods; brother, Landon Cordell Woods; grandparents, Deloris Becenti, Byron D. Charlee, Gwendolyn Charlee, Calvin Gauldin, Kathy Gauldin, Damon B. Woods.

Pallbearers will be Alan S. Charless, Cameron V. Woods, Stewart Billie, Damon B. Woods.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Lakevalley Chapter House, following services.

Alfred Yazzie

FORT DEFIANCE — Funeral Mass for Alfred Walter Yazzie, 77, were 10 a.m., today, Oct. 6, at St. Michaels Mission, St. Michaels. The Rev. Gilbert Schneider, OFM, will officiate. Burial will be in veterans cemetery, Fort Defiance. A rosary was recited 6:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 5, at St. Michael’s Mission.

Yazzie died Sept. 30, 2009, in Fort Defiance. He was born Oct. 15, 1931, in Fort Defiance, into the Red Running Into the Water People Clan for the Black Sheep People Clan.

Yazzie attended Window Rock High School. He did field radio repair in the U.S. Army and was a retired Chief of Police with Navajo Nation Police. He was the first Native American to graduated from the FBI National Academy and was a well known Chanter of the night way.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Moore Yazzie; sons, Alfred Vernon Yazzie, Aaron Walter Yazzie, Marc Yazzie; daughters, Sharon Ann Benally, Karin Ann Yazzie, Samantha Ann Yazzie; parents, Walter Yazzie, Gleehabah Yazzie; brother, Tom Walter Yazzie; sister, Ann Marie Littlefish; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Alfred V. Yazzie, Marc Scott, Jarrett A. Kraft, Jaimeson P. Kraft, Marvin Mose, and Nicholas Littlefish.

Cope Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
