Jerry Begay

CRYSTAL — Funeral services for Jerry Lee Begay, 55, were 10 a.m., today, Oct. 16, at Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church, Ganado.

President Peter Yazzie will officiate. Burial will be in Ganado Community Cemetery. Viewing will be 9 a.m.

Begay was born Jan. 15, 2009, in Cornfields, into the Zuni Black Streak Running Into the Water People Clan for the Coyote Pass People Clan.

Survivors include his wife, Veronica Toledo; son, Jerold Begay; daughters, Lucita Begay, Loretta Begay; parents, Hosteen Begay, Margaret Anderson; brothers, Francis Begay, James H. Begay, Harry Lee Begay Sr., Jackson Begay, Victor Begay Sr.; sisters, Nellie Rose Begay, Shirley Yazzie, Lorria Begaye.

Begay was preceded in death by his parents, Hosteen Begay, Margaret Begay; brothers, Thomas Begay, Harry H. Begay, Lee Harold Begay, Jameson Begay, Richardson Begay; sister, Mary Jim.

Pallbearers will be Jeremy L. Begay, Jeffrey L. Begay, Corey L. Attson, Ricky Begay, Alfred John, Micah Laughing, Joshua Laughing, William Laughing.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Robert/Lorria Begaye’s residence, Cornfields.

Leo Bia

FLAGSTAFF — Funeral services for Leo Bia, 46, will be 11 a.m., Oct. 17, at the All Saints Mission, Ganado. Brother Paul O’Brien, OFM, will officiate. Burial will be in Ganado Community Cemetery.

Bia died Oct. 13, 2009, in Flagstaff. He was born July 5, 1963, in Ganado, into the Black Streak of Forest People Clan for the Bitter Water People Clan.

Bia attended Ganado Elementary, Ganado Middle School, and graduated from Ganado High School.

He worked for Ignance Brothers Construction at the time of this death. Bia was a runner, he ran in many marathons such as Chicago Marathon, San Francisco Marathon and many local. Survivors include his wife, Regina Biah; sons, Leander Biah, Cory Biah, Aaron Biah, Zachary Biah; daughter, Leandra Sarracino; brother, John Bia Jr., Francis Bia; sisters, Bonita James, Anita Bob, Alberta Tsosie, Bernice Luvchute; two grandchildren.

Bia was preceded in death by his parents, John and Blanche Bia; brothers, Ree Bia, Sammy Bia, Peter Bia; sister, Roberta Bia.

Pallbearers will be family members.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Ganado Chapter House, following services.

COYOTE CANYON — Services are pending for Ernie Cowboy, 88.

Cowboy died Oct. 15, 2009, in Albuquerque. He was born April 10, 1921, in Crownpoint, into the Near the Water People Clan for the Folded Arms People Clan.

Thelma Frost

COTTONWOOD — Memorial services for Thelma Jean Frost, 80, will be 7 p.m., Oct. 17, at Highland Baptist Church, 417 Palomas Dr., Albuquerque.

Frost died Sept. 20, 2009, in Cottonwood.

Frost was known as “Jean” while working in the hospitality industry. She managed several hotels, restaurants, and bars during her 30 years of service.

Survivors include her children, Paul Stout of Reserve, N.M., Phillip Stout of Maple Valley, Wash., Carolyn Siebersma of Cornville, Ariz.; sisters, Esta Mae Hall of Albuquerque, Ina Lovoina Chadwick of Belen; brother, Harold Matthews of Ruidoso Downs; six grandchildren; one great-grandson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church.

Manulia Gabaldon

GRANTS — Funeral Mass for Manulia (Lula) Gabaldon, 90, will be 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 17, at St. Teresa Catholic Church. The Very Rev. Alberto Avella will officiate. Cremation will follow.

A rosary will be recited 7 p.m., tonight, Oct. 16, at St. Teresa Catholic Church.

Gabaldon died Oct. 15, 2009. She was born March 13, 1919, in Seboyeta.

Gabaldon was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church, and was active for 12 years with Grants Headstart foster grandparent program.

Survivors include her sons, Tommy Gabaldon Sr. of Grants, Eddie Gabaldon of Paragon, Indiana, Ralph Gabaldon of Grand Junction, Colo., Manuel Gabaldon of Grants; daughters, Betty Lovato of Bluewater, Evelyn Ruelas of Grants; 29 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; many great-great-grandchildren.

Gabaldon was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel Gabaldon; son, Santiago Gabaldon; daughter, Shirley Gallegos; two grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Monique Johnson, Jerome Gabaldon, Virgil Martinez, Tommy Gabaldon Jr., Jesse Lovato, Valerie Gabaldon.

A reception will be at the Betty and Francis Lovato residence in Bluewater, following services.

VANDERWAGEN — Funeral services for Jane Lee, 68, will be 10 a.m., Oct. 17, at Pine Tree Mission, Vanderwagen. Eugene Cody Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Tree, Vanderwagen.

Lee died Oct. 10, 2009, in Albuquerque. She was born Oct. 10, 1941, in Vanderwagen, into the Towering House People Clan for the Salt People Clan.

Lee worked for TB Tech, special 5 years program and got her GED March 1984.

Survivors include her husband, Joe M. Lee of Vanderwagen; son, Leslie Joseph Lee of Vanderwagen; daughter, Laurel L. Naton of Vanderwagen; brothers, Tommy Skeet of Vanderwagen, Kim Wilson of Las Vegas, Nev.; sister, Helen Nez of Vanderwagen; one grandchild.

Lee was preceded in death by her parents, Money and Hazba Skeet; brothers, Charley Skeet, Joe Skeet, Patrick Skeet; sisters, Mary Chee, Betty Nelson, Annie Rose Smith.

Pallbearers will be Mike Chee, Leonard Chee, Clinton Chee, Howard Eddie, Darrin B. Joe, Roy Nelson.

Dustin Mortensen

PHOENIX — Funeral Mass for Dustin Wendell Mortensen, 41, will be 11 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Mesita (I-40, exit. 117.) The Rev. Don will officiate.

Mortensen died Oct. 11, 2009, in Phoenix. He was born July 4, 1968, in Gallup.

Survivors include his sons, Dillon Mortensen of Phoenix, Nicholas Mortensen of Phoenix; parents, Cheryl Jennings of Albuquerque, Wendell Mortensen of Flagstaff; sisters, Teresa Peterson of Albuquerque, MacKenzie Mortensen of Denver; brother, Wade Mortensen of Denver; grandparents, Jerry and Phyllis Hannah of Winslow.

Mortensen was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ray Rodriguez, Ethel Cheromiah.

Williard Olivier

LUKACHUKAI — Services for Willard Varnell Oliver, 88, will be 9 a.m., Oct. 17, at St. Isabelle Catholic Church, Lukachukai. The Rev. Blane will officiate. Burial will be in St. Isabelle Church Cemetery, Lukachukai.

Oliver died Oct. 14, 2009, in Prescott. He was born May 2, 1921, in Shiprock.

Olivier attended Shiprock Agricultural High School and worked with Santa Fe Railroad, was an ambulance driver, Navajo Police officer, gas pipeline worker in Blackhat, carpenter, construction worker. His hobbies included watching football, pow-wows and he liked to travel.

Survivors include his wife, Nellie Marie Oliver; sons, Varnell Oliver of Lukachukai, Virgil Oliver of Wood Bridge, Va., Lawrence Oliver of Window Rock; daughters, Pearl V. Platero of Many Farms, Brenda Oliver of North Hills, Calif., Sandra Oliver of Fort Defiance, Melinda Oliver of Shonto, Olivia A. Whitethorne of Shonto, Regina Oliver of Lukachukai, Gloria MacLaine of Houck; brother, Lloyd Oliver of Camp Verde; sisters, Helen Lynch of Window Rock, Dorothy Ramerez of Window Rock; 36 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren.

Oliver was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Oliver, Olive Oliver; sister, Vivian Barstow; brother, Herman Oliver.

Gilbert Sandoval

FORT DEFIANCE — Funeral services for Gilbert Rodger Sandoval “Gilly”, 55, will be 10 a.m., Oct. 17, at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, Fort Defiance. The Rev. Gilbert Schneider will officiate.

Burial will be in Fort Defiance Community Cemetery, Fort Defiance. Visitation will be 9 a.m., Oct. 17.

Sandoval died Oct. 13, 2009, in Fort Defiance. He was born May 15, 1954, in Ganado, into the Many Goats People Clan for the Red Running Into the Water People Clan.

Sandoval graduated from Window Rock High School in 1972, and attended Navajo Community College, Sinte Gleska College in South Dakota, to pursue a degree in Elementary Education as a sign language interpreter. He worked at asbestos/laborer abatement worker, teacher aid, and a firefighter. His hobbies included watching sports, doing his leather and wood work, drumming and singing, being with family, friends and listening to music. He also enjoyed being outdoors.

Survivors include his daughters, May Star, Morning Star, both of South Dakota; brother, Mike R. Sandoval, Patrick J. Sandoval, both of Ganado; sister, Gena Sandoval-Jackson of Fort Defiance; one grandchild.

Sandoval was preceded in death by his parents, Rodge and Rita Sandoval; sisters, Sandi Sandoval, Birdie Sandoval-Williams; son, Lee Scott; grandparents, Jack Sr. and Julia Kyseika.
Pallbearers will be Gary Lewis, Wally Peshlakai, Lennie Reynolds, Marlon Stevens, Ernest Taliman, Cecil Yazza.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Saint Dominic Hall, Fort Defiance, following services.
