GRANTS — Staff Sgt. Judson Hemperley watched his Army medical aid station doctor jump into a foxhole to avoid being shot by a strafing German airplane during World War II.

“He broke his ankle, and we shipped out the next day,” Hemperley said. His Army unit was in Marseilles, France, in 1942.
