Crownpoint student killed in Socorro

SOCORRO (AP) — A New Mexico Tech student has died from stab wounds, and police say his mother and three brothers have been taken into custody.

Socorro police Capt. Mike Winders says 22-year-old Garrett Joe of Crownpoint died Friday morning, shortly after a passer-by found him alive at a Socorro skate park.

Police say Joe had been stabbed four times in the back and hit on the head with a wrench.

Winders says the killing stemmed from a domestic dispute.

Police say Joe’s three brothers are accused of ambushing him while he was skateboarding, and their mother is accused of hiding evidence.

The brothers are charged with murder, and the mother is charged with tampering with evidence.

New Mexico Tech officials say Joe enrolled at the school as a freshman last September.
