Local farmers markets growing By Elizabeth Hardin-Burrola GALLUP For those who enjoy purchasing fresh garden produce from local growers, the Ramahs Farmers Market is back in full-swing, Gallups smaller market is just getting off the ground, and Shiprocks market is scheduled to begin next month. Although the Four Corners region isnt the easiest place to garden, a number of local residents do sell fresh vegetables, herbs, fruits, eggs, and baked goods at the markets during the mid-summer to early fall. WIC recipients who are enrolled in the WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program can use their coupons at participating farmers markets. Senior citizens who are enrolled in a similar program are now also invited to use their coupons at the Gallup and Ramah markets to purchase fresh vegetables, greens, and fruit. The Gallup Farmers Market is starting off smaller this year because of damaging late frosts and fewer local growers, said local coordinator Carole Palmer. Area residents who have their own gardens are welcome to sign-up to sell on a regular, occasional, or even one-time basis at the following markets: Gallup Farmers Market Ramah Farmers Market Shiprock Farmers Market Information: www.farmersmarketsnm.org |
