Fire restriction order is lifted
on Navajo Nation

By Independent staff

WINDOW ROCK — The order of fire restriction is being lifted for the Navajo Nation. On May 1, an order of fire restriction was put into effect within the Navajo Nation because of the high fire damage.

According to data gathered at the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Branch of Fire and Aviation Management fire lookouts, potential fire danger for the Navajo Nation has been reduced since the recent rain showers.

However, people utilizing the Navajo Nation’s forest and woodland areas for ceremonial purposes, livestock branding and burning of personal possessions are to continue to obtain BIA Forestry Burn Permits. Fires in developed recreational camp grounds are not required to obtain a burn permit.

Anyone may be required to pay restitution to the Navajo Nation the full cost of fire suppression and/or fair market value of the timbers and improvements destroyed or damaged by a fire for which they started.
