ZUNI — None of the five schools in the Zuni School District met Adequate Yearly Progress this year, according to state officials.

Two schools — A-Shiwi Elementary and Dowa Yalanne Elementary made AYP last year.

Here is a rundown on how the schools did this year as compared to how they did three years ago.

  • A-Shiwi Elementary — According to the state, the school made its overall math goals but not its reading goals, although the figures provided by the state would indicate otherwise. The school’s student proficiency goals last year were 44 percent proficiency in math and 59 in reading. It achieved a 36.3 percent in math and a 47.6 percent in reading. Three years ago, the school posted a 54.35 percent proficiency in math and a 41.3 percent in reading. It met AYP that year.
  • Dowa Yalanne Elementary — Met the overall standards set for math but did not meet reading standards. Its math goals for last year were a student proficiency level of 44 in math and 59 in reading. It achieved a 46.1 in math and a 47.2 in reading. Three years ago, the math proficiency was 64.66 and the reading level was 66.38. It met AYP that year, as it did in the year before.
  • Twin Buttes High — Met the standards for reading but not for math, although its hard to say because it only has a total enrollment of 15 students and the state requires a 25 student level for testing. The state gave it no rating in math and a 50 percent rating in reading. Three years ago its enrollment was 34 students and it had a 8.7 percent proficiency in math and a 39.13 in reading.
  • Zuni High — Did not meet the standards in either math or reading. Its goals last year were a 40 percent student proficiency in math and a 56 percent in reading. It achieved a 12.1 in math and a 39.4 percent in reading. Three years ago, the school achieved a 9.77 in math and a 35.81 in reading.
n Zuni Middle — Met the goals in reading but not in math, according to the state, but the numbers show a lower percentage for reading than the goals. Its goals last year were 35 percent proficiency in math and 53 percent in reading. It achieved 18.5 in math and 46.1 in reading. Three years ago, the school had a 12.8 percent in math and a 35.2 percent in reading.

How well each school in the state has done over the years is now available on the New Mexico Public Education Department’s Web site. To get to it, go to www.sde.state.nm.us. On the home page is a box which has AYP 2008. Click on that and go to the middle of the next page which has the work link in purple. That will link you to the 2008 reports by school district.

To get to Zuni schools, go to where it says “District” and type in Zuni and the school names will appear. Click on the school you want to see.

The state also has records going back four years so you can get an idea of whether this or that school has passed AYP in the past or is showing progress.
