US 491 widening: Reports of its demise grealty exaggerated Copyright © 2008 GALLUP Reports that the U.S. Highway
491 widening project may soon be stalled because of the sluggish
economy may be a little premature. Television station KOB reported Thursday that
an unnamed construction foreman for the state was concerned that
the economy within the state could mean less revenue and could have
an adverse effect on several major road projects in the state, including
the U.S. 491 widening. Construction on that project finally got under
way in July after more than a decade of delays and setbacks. When
it is completed, the two lanes that now exist between Tohatchi and
Shiprock will be widened to four lanes. The state is also in the
final stages of repaving some 30 miles of U.S. 491 north of Gallup. State Department of Transportation officials
said Friday that both projects are proceeding on schedule and they
have heard no reports of any funding problems that could delay the
projects. Delane Baros, public information officer for
the state agency, said her department had a photographer at the
site of the widening project and it was going as scheduled.
Local officials connected with the construction
project offices in Gallup also said they have heard no reports that
their projects in this area may be delayed because of funding problems. State Rep. Patty Lundstrom, who was in Santa
Fe for meetings most of Friday, said when she returned late in the
afternoon that she also has heard of no reports about funding problems
with the projects. I was in a meeting with the cabinet officer for transportation a couple of hours ago and he didnt mention anything to me of problems, she said. |
