GALLUP — McKinley County sheriff’s deputies and a K-9 unit responded to the scene of a domestic violence situation where a woman stabbed herself repeatedly in the stomach.

Authorities were called to Rural Address #157 Burnt Corn Road at about 8 a.m. Sunday to search for a woman who stabbed herself multiple times following a fight with her sister and father. The woman was identified as 18-year-old Charlene Scott, according to a incident report filed by the McKinley County Sheriff’s Department.

Spike, a K-9 for the agency, searched the area for Scott beginning in a nearby arroyo northwest of the residence. According to police, Scott’s footprints were visible in that area.

“K-9 Spike continued to follow the original tracks east up and over a hill going to a trailer located at RA #192 Burnt Corn Road. I then advised Sgt. Martinez that Spike has indicated that Mrs. Scott had gone to the trailer,” Sgt. John Trevor-Smith, Spike’s handler wrote in a K-9 deployment report.

Deputies discovered Scott inside the trailer and she was immediately turned over to Navajo police and Med-Star ambulance employees for treatment. She suffered from at least six stab wounds to her stomach and a possible head wound from the domestic violence situation. Scott was expected to survive her injuries.

Crownpoint police officials were not immediately available for comment about whether any arrests were made in connection with the fight.
