GALLUP — Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician Artie Sandoval was inspecting and restocking supplies on the emergency rescue rig when I got to station one about 8 a.m.

His shift started at 7 a.m. ... technically mine should have, too ... but I was running late, and the previous shift captain had teased that he was going to write me up for being late on my first day. I reminded him that this was an assignment — 24 hours on duty with Crew C — and that I’m not on payroll. He laughed and hung up the phone.
