WINDOW ROCK — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 6 in Dallas, the New Mexico Environment Department, and other agencies will host a listening session Tuesday in Grants regarding legacy uranium mining and milling activities in the Grants Mineral Belt.

EPA and NMED are asking community members to assist them in gathering information and providing input on planning activities related to efforts to assess and address environmental impacts resulting from legacy activities.

The listening session will be held 6:30 to 8:30 at the Cibola County Building, 515 High St.

Region 6 and NMED are working on a five-year plan, similar to that now being carried out on the Navajo Nation, to address legacy issues. There is very little data that exists prior to the mid-1970s, according to state officials.
