THOREAU — For Charley Long, life has gotten a lot easier since County Road 27 between Thoreau and Fort Wingate has been improved.

It’s one of the hundreds of miles of county roads that residents have been trying for years — sometimes for decades — to get chip sealed. Long, as well as dozens of other families who live north and west of Thoreau have had to make due with a gravel road that would become muddy and almost impossible to get through in bad weather.
