Phillip Dawes

FORT DEFIANCE — Funeral services for Phillip Melvin Dawes, 65, will be 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 31, at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, Fort Defiance. Deacon Abel Olivias will officiate. Burial will be in Fort Defiance. Visitation will be 9 a.m., Dec. 31, at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, Fort Defiance.

Dawes died Dec. 28, 2009, in Gallup. He was born July 29, 1944, in Fort Defiance, into the Water’s Edge People Clan for the Bitter Water People Clan.

Dawes graduated from Window Rock High School. He worked for Window Rock School District.

Survivors include his son, Lionel A. Dawes of Fort Defiance; daughter, Bernadine R. Letcher of Santa Fe; sisters, Vivian Milford of Fort Defiance, Arlene Thompson of Wingate; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Dawes was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Dawes, Polly Balone Dawes; brother, Irvin Dawes, Wayne Dawes; sister, Joan Keedah Dawes; son, Ivan Dawes.

Pallbearers will be Anthony Letcher, Chantee Letcher, Paul Diaz, Michael Dawes, Lionel Dawes, Marcellus Thompson.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Good Shepherd Mission, Fort Defiance, following services.

Garcia died Dec. 24, 2009, in Lancaster, Calif.

Louise Hudson

PREWITT — Funeral services for Louise D. Hudson, 46, will be 12 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 31, in Casamero Lake. Evangelist Jones Benally will officiate. Burial will be in family land, Casamero Lake.

Hudson died Dec. 24, 2009, in Prewitt. She was born April 29, 1963, in Crownpoint, into the Salt People Clan for the Two Came to the Water People Clan.

Hudson attended Thoreau Mid. and High School.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed traveling and going to church. Her hobbies included baking, crocheting and singing.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald V. Hudson; step-son, Regnald Hudson of Grants; daughters, LuAnne Martinez of Prewitt, Ramona Delgarito of Albuquerque; mother, Benita Delgarito of Prewitt; brothers, Jones Delgarito of Bluewater, David Delgarito of Winner, S.D., Samson Delgarito of Prewitt, Elvis Delgarito of Berrego Pass; sisters, Rita Ross of Prewitt, Loretta Delgarito of Milan, Betty Nolasco of Prewitt; six grandchildren.

Hudson was preceded in death by her father, Clark Delgarito; Emma C. Delgarito.

Pallbearers will be John Martinez, Regnald Hudson, Shane Smith, Frazier Kee, Marco Apachito, Ernest Manuelito.

The family will receive relatives and friends on the family land, Casamero Lake.

Martha Martinez

GRANTS — Funeral Mass for Martha A. Martinez, 86, were 10 a.m., today, Dec. 30, at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. Burial was in Grants Memorial Park. The Very Rev. Alberto Avella officiated. A rosary was recited 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 29, at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church.

Martinez died Dec. 25, 2009, in Grants. He was born July 14, 1923, in Fierro.

Survivors include her daughters, Ernestine Griego of Albuquerque, Emilia Balli of Grants, Rita Renaud of Chesapeake, Va.; brothers, Jesus Arciero of Byard, Arturo Arciero of California, Esequiel Arcierco of El Paso, Texas; sisters, Azucena Flores of Bayard, Carmen Valles of Los Angeles, Calif.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

Martinez was preceded in death by her husband, Augustin R. Martinez; parents, Jose L. Arciero, Francisca Gonzales Arciero.

Pallbearers will be Ralph Flores, Ruben Flores, Victorio Rodriguez.

Sylvia Newton

PREWITT — Memorial services for Sylvia P. Newton, 78, will be 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 2, at First Baptist Church, Thoreau. Dr. Robert Hughbanks and the Rev. Garland Moore will officiate.

Newton died Dec. 22, 2009, in Prewitt. She was born Aug. 12, 1931, in Gallup.

Newton was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Thoreau. She was also a member of the Ramona Rebekah Lodge in Gallup and the Lion’s Club in Crownpoint.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Newton of Prewitt; sons, Victor Newton of Gallup, Vaughn Newton of Pleasant City, Ohio; daughters, Velnita Long of Joseph City, Ariz., Verna Merry of New Mexico; brother, Victor Parker of Buena Park, Calif.; sister, Molly Williams of Plano, Texas; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

Newton was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Juanita Parker; sister, Anita June Trudo; one grandson.

Marjorie Ortiz

SANTA FE — Services for Marjorie Louise Ortiz, 88, will be 1 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 31, at Rollie Mortuary. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Gallup.

Ortiz died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, in Santa Fe. She was born July 31, 1921, in Albuquerque.

Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline Thomas

JONES RANCH — Services are pending for Pauline M. Thomas, 74.

Thomas died Dec. 28, 2009, in Gallup. She was born Sept. 2, 1935, in Two Wells

A family gathering will be 5 p.m., today, Dec. 30, at Red Rock Chapter and 5 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 31, at Churchrock Chapter.
